Prayer Partner

For those of us who keep on track with prayer, the inability to pray would be a great loss. Ongoing communication with the Lord keeps us afloat through our life travels.

People with memory loss often lose their ability to read prohibiting them from reading scripture or devotionals. They also may not remember the words to memorized prayers and bible verses. Struggling to recall leaves them frustrated.

The memory care home my husband resides in offers a daily devotion including Catholic Mass, communion service, scripture readings, the rosary, and singing hymns. It’s evident the residents look forward to these prayerful times and participate as much as they are able. I’m particularly in awe when the Our Father is prayed. Many may be dozing or comprehending little, but most reverently join in during this prayer.

In the past, Marshall attended Mass with me only on special occasions. Now, he eagerly prays with me and attends service daily. He finds comfort in the devotion, and he never forgets that he loves Jesus and Jesus loves him.

If one of your friends or family members suffers memory loss, ask them if they would like you to prayer with them. Read a scripture verse or short inspirational passage to them. Briefly talk about what it means. Hold their hands and make eye contact while doing so. You will find the experience to be as moving for yourself as it is for them.
