Veni Sancte Spiritus. Come Holy Spirit.
The first time I heard the haunting hymn by this name was at an ordination. It was sung during the part of the ceremony known as Laying on of Hands where the newly ordained receive a blessing from fellow priests. I literally felt the Spirit fire within me from deep inside my soul.
The Spirit of God is powerful. Want to know right from wrong? The Spirit will guide us. Want to find peace? Set your mind on the Spirit. Wondering where to go? What to do? How to do it? The Holy Spirit not only has the answers, but the power to send us on the right course.
Jesus said not to worry about how to defend our beliefs. The Holy Spirit will teach us exactly what to say and at the right time (Luke 12:11). Scripture calls the Holy Spirit the Breath of God, our advocate, Spirit of truth, teacher, comforter, hope, and counselor.
And we don’t have to look far, because the Spirit lives with and in us. Its presence isn’t hard to spot. The Holy Spirit is identified by its fruits: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).
Just never speak against the Holy Spirit. That will never be forgiven (Luke 12:10).
